Filing a trademark in Syria as a foreign company
First-to-file, one application per class, and a legalized power of attorney. What to know before you file as the market reopens.
First to file wins
In Syria a trademark belongs to the first party to file, not the first to use. A foreign company can trade under a name for years abroad and still lose it here to whoever reaches the registry first. So the rule is simple: file before you announce, launch or distribute. The cost of filing now is small next to the cost of buying back a mark someone else has registered.
What you prepare
You need a clear representation of the mark, the goods or services it covers, and the original power of attorney, duly legalized and authenticated up to the Syrian Consulate where applicable. Syria follows the Nice Classification (13th Edition) and takes a separate application per class, so a brand selling across categories files in each one. We secure the classes that carry real commercial risk first and stage the rest.
Timeline and term
Examination takes roughly two to three months, then the mark is published for a three-month opposition window. With no opposition, registration usually follows around eight to ten months from filing. Protection runs ten years from the filing date and renews for successive ten-year terms. Alazmeh files and manages trademarks end to end, so speak to us before you announce.
