Trademarks
Protect the name, mark and identity your business trades under in Syria.
A trademark is how your customers recognize you and how you keep competitors from trading on your reputation. Alazmeh secures trademark rights in Syria and manages the full life of the mark: searches, filing, examination, publication, opposition, registration, renewal, and the recordal of assignments, licenses and changes.
What it protects
- The brand name and wordmark you deal in or trade under
- Service marks, collective marks and certification (quality) marks
- Color marks that identify your products
Who should file
Any company or individual using or planning to use a brand in Syria, and any foreign business entering the market. Register before you launch: Syria examines on a first-to-file basis, so the first party to apply generally prevails.
What you need to submit
Supporting documents must be dated no earlier than six months before the application. A filing may proceed while documents are completed within six months, subject to a fine per document per month of delay.
- The original power of attorney, duly legalized and authenticated, including authentication through the Syrian Consulate where applicable.
- A copy of any local or foreign trademark registration certificate, if available, to support the application.
- A clear print or representation of the mark.
- A description of the mark, including its meaning and any translation or transliteration.
- The class or classes and the list of goods or services to be covered.
- A certified priority document where Convention priority is claimed.
From search to registration
- Optional clearance search, completed within about fifteen days.
- File the application, one application per class under the Nice Classification (13th Edition).
- Substantive examination by the Directorate of Commercial and Industrial Property Protection (the Syrian trademarks office).
- Publication, opening a three-month opposition window.
- Registration, generally around eight to ten months from filing where no opposition is raised.
- Protection runs ten years from the filing date and is renewable for successive ten-year terms.
Keeping the mark in force
- Renewal of registrations before expiry, with a grace period on payment of a penalty.
- Recordal of assignments, mergers and changes of name or address.
- Recordal of licenses and registered-user entries.
- Oppositions, cancellations and non-use actions, filed and defended.
- Watch and enforcement against infringing or confusingly similar marks.
