Patents
Protect the inventions that set you apart, and maintain them in force in Syria.
A patent gives you the exclusive right to a new invention: a product or process that is novel, involves an inventive step and can be applied industrially. Alazmeh files and prosecutes patents in Syria and maintains them through their term. Applications may be filed directly under the Paris Convention or as national-phase entries under the Patent Cooperation Treaty (PCT).

Who should file
Businesses and inventors with new technology, and foreign applicants entering the national phase of a PCT application. File before any public disclosure to preserve novelty.
Two ways to file
Paris Convention application
- Power of attorney, legalized up to the Syrian Consulate (allow one to two months).
- Certified priority document, filed within three months.
- Specification, claims and abstract in English or French, with an Arabic translation.
- A legalized deed of assignment from the inventor(s) to the applicant, where applicable.
- A certified copy of the corresponding foreign patent, at a later stage.
PCT national-phase entry
- National phase entered within 31 months of the priority date.
- Power of attorney, legalized up to the Syrian Consulate (allow two to three months).
- The PCT request form and application documents.
- International search and examination reports.
- Arabic translations of the supporting documents.
Keeping the patent in force
- Protection runs for twenty years from the filing date (for a PCT national-phase entry, twenty years from the international PCT filing date).
- Annuities are paid annually, with a six-month grace period for late payment.
- The invention must be worked in Syria within three years of grant, failing which it may be subject to a compulsory license.
- We track every annuity and deadline so a patent is never lost by oversight.
