Design protects the look, not the copy

An industrial design protects how a product looks: its new and distinctive external shape, pattern and ornamentation. Copyright can arise automatically in an artistic work, but for products it is awkward. Ownership and originality are hard to prove, the line between art and a functional product is contested, and enforcement is slow. Copyright suits graphics; it is a weak base for the shape of a product you sell.

Why register

A registered design gives you a dated, enforceable right in the official register. It is far easier to assert against a copier, it carries a clear priority date, and it can be licensed, assigned or used as an asset in a deal. For a product that competes partly on how it looks, that certainty is the difference between deterring imitation and litigating over it.

Term, and file before you show it

Protection runs five years from filing, renewable twice, up to fifteen years. Paris Convention applicants have a six-month priority window, and Syria is party to the Hague Agreement for international design registration. A design must be new, so public disclosure before filing can destroy the novelty you are protecting. Alazmeh prepares the drawings and manages registration and renewal.
